The FARMS 5.0 project is currently progressing with the implementation of Work Package 2 (WP2), which focuses on the development of the Cutting-edge Report on Agriculture 5.0 in Europe. This phase combines extensive desk research with ongoing field research across partner countries, aiming to build a comprehensive, evidence-based understanding of the evolving Agriculture 5.0 landscape.
Agriculture 5.0 represents the next stage in the digital and green transformation of the agricultural sector. It goes beyond precision agriculture by integrating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT sensors, robotics, big data analytics, and automation with sustainability-driven approaches. The concept places strong emphasis on climate resilience, efficient resource management, reduced environmental impact, and improved working conditions for farmers. At the same time, it highlights the human dimension, ensuring that technological innovation is accessible, inclusive, and aligned with the needs of rural communities.
Within WP2, the research explores key aspects such as technological adoption, sustainable and regenerative farming practices, sector challenges, opportunities, and emerging trends shaping the future of agriculture. Particular attention is given to how farmers and agricultural stakeholders adapt to digital tools, as well as the barriers they face, including skills gaps, investment constraints, and regional disparities.
A central element of the research is stakeholder engagement. Farmers, VET trainers, academics, policymakers, and trade union representatives are actively contributing to the process, ensuring that the findings are grounded in real experiences and reflect actual needs within the sector.
As WP2 continues, the insights gathered will provide a strong foundation for the next phase of the project – Work Package 3 (WP3), which will focus on the development of the FARMS 5.0 VET Training Programme. This upcoming phase will translate research outcomes into practical, targeted training solutions designed to equip professionals with the skills required for Agriculture 5.0.
Through this ongoing work, FARMS 5.0 is contributing to the development of a more innovative, sustainable, and future-ready agricultural sector across Europe.
